Blue Throated Macaw
The stunning Blue Throated Macaw might appear to be a Blue & Gold at first glance. But look closely, he is not at all the same. Blue Throated Macaws are slightly smaller in size, approximately 33 inches or 85 cm in length and about 750 grams in weight. They originate in Bolivia, South America. Most clearly visable as a difference, is the blue throat, not black, and the forehead is blue, not green, like the Blue & Gold's. Generally friendly and outgoing in nature, these birds breed well in captivity but are extremely endangered now in nature.
Feed them a natural pelleted diet, a healthy high-quality nut mixture and lots of dark green and orange veggies. Spinach, kale, broccoli, squash, sweet potato, etc. They usually love most fruits, the more exotic the fruit, the better in their eyes!
Housing this wonderful pet must also be considered when thinking about the purchase price. If you can't afford the right cage, toys, etc., than you can't afford the bird! You must provide a large and sturdy home for most macaws. A well built cage will hold up to their destructive nature. And toys are mandatory, not optional. Provide lots of wood for chewing and interchange often to prevent boredom.
$1,595 Unweaned, on three hand feedings daily, only to experienced hand feeders of Macaws.
$2,195 when weaned onto a pelleted diet, a high quality nut mixture and fresh fruits and vegetables daily.
