The Grit Controversy Resolved
There seems to be a lot of questions about the use of Grit for Exotic Pet Birds. Grit is a finely ground, sanitized gravel, fed to certain bird species like pigeons and doves. Pigeons and doves need grit because they swollow their seed whole. They do not shuck the seed first.
Grit helps with the digestion of whole seeds.
Hookbills, such as parrots, do not need grit in their diet because they shell the seed, or shuck the seed, before eating it.
If you feed seed and see all those seed shucks on your floor, you know you don't need grit!
